What happened
President Donald Trump met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, France on June 17, 2026. “It’s a great pleasure to be with my friend, the president of Egypt. He’s respected all over the world, including by me,” the President said. “We’re helping him with a little dam project that I think was very — I think you were very unfairly treated, if you want to know that, in Ethiopia.” He said the two would discuss trade — “we do a lot of business with Egypt” — and the river at the center of the dam dispute: “We’ll be discussing the Nile because the Nile is getting a little emptier than it should be.” He said he had “that deal settled” in his first term and would “get back into it. We’ll see if we can settle it up.” President el-Sisi expressed his appreciation and respect and thanked the President for the opportunity to meet.
Taking questions, the President previewed his 4 p.m. closing press conference (paged separately in this collection) and rejected a reported term of the Iran agreement: asked about reports of a $300 billion fund funded by Gulf allies, he answered, “False. False. False… we are not investing. We’re not putting up 10 cents.” He described the agreement’s status plainly: “It’s not final. It’s a memorandum of understanding. And if I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs on their head.” He cited the market reaction as he stated it — the stock market “gone up thousands of points over the last four or five days,” the strait “already partially opened” and opening in full “over the next day or two,” and oil at “$73 or 74” and falling — and credited the Navy’s unpublicized work during the conflict: “We averaged from 15 to 25 ships a night. Nobody knew that… That’s why oil didn’t go to $300 a barrel.”
Why it matters
The Nile dam dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia is one of the longest-running water conflicts in the region, and the President put an American mediation offer on the record in front of the Egyptian president at the G7. The meeting also produced his clearest on-camera denial of the reported Gulf-funded investment fund — a term of the Iran agreement this chronicle is tracking against the document’s eventual release.
Scoreboard watch
Two dated claims to track: the offer to settle the Nile dam dispute, and the denial — “not 10 cents” of American money and no American-administered fund — against the agreement’s published terms.
