What happened

President Donald Trump met the President of the United Arab Emirates on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, France on June 16, 2026. “His Highness is a warrior. He was in there fighting and he does what has to be done… He’s a courageous man,” the President said. “They’ve invested trillions of dollars in the United States… we have over 19 trillion dollars being invested in the United States, which is a record.” The UAE President thanked him “for your support, your commitment to your friends, to your allies, and special thanks for your support during the six-week war… without your support, your commitment, Mr. President, not my country only but the Middle East will be in a different situation today.”

On the Iran agreement, the President said: “We just signed a deal with Iran and this country was a very, very powerful ally and good things are happening. The ships are starting to move now. We’re going to have it fully open by Friday… most importantly Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.” On the negotiation’s second stage, he described “a 60-day period or so. I think it’s going to happen fairly on time… It could go faster. Could take longer, too, but it could go faster.”

Asked why he had not released the agreement’s text, he said he wanted “a formal setting first,” then committed to both publication and Congress: “I will actually — I’ll not only release it, I’ll probably have a press conference and read it to you word by word so that the press covers it accurately… I never thought about sending it [to Congress]. Never even thought about it. But I will send it to Congress. I like the idea.” He restated the deal’s terms as he presents them — “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon… that’s about 99.9% of what I wanted” — and that the strait “is going to be open toll-free. And it’s toll-free beyond the 60 days… When it opens permanently, it’ll be toll-free.” On expanding the Abraham Accords, he said “I think they’re all going to come in… the only conflict was a place called Iran,” and on Russia sanctions: “Soon we’ll be able to do that because the oil is now flowing.”

Why it matters

The Emirates were, by the President’s account, a wartime ally in the conflict the agreement ends, and this meeting is where he attached dates and process to it in public: the strait fully open by Friday, a roughly 60-day second stage, the text released in a formal setting, and the agreement sent to Congress for review.

Scoreboard watch

This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: three checkable commitments made on camera — the strait’s full opening by Friday, June 19, 2026; the public release of the agreement text; and its transmission to Congress.
