What happened
President Donald Trump met the Emir of Qatar and the Qatari Prime Minister on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, France on June 16, 2026. “The Amir is a fantastic man, respected all over the world,” the President said. “We have our deal done with Iran and it should be successful. It goes to a second stage which I think will be actually easier.” He stressed Qatar’s exposure and role: “They are the closest to Iran physically… you were in a more dangerous position. But I just do have to say you fought and you helped us and with great bravery.”
The Emir thanked the President “for your leadership in this very, very important, critical time in the Middle East,” and put the bilateral relationship in figures as he stated them: “Since your historic visit in Doha last year, our trade partnership is going to reach $1.2 trillion dollars, and this is huge, and we have a lot of great investments that we’re very proud of in the U.S., and also American companies investing in Qatar.”
The President returned repeatedly to the agreement’s core clause and how it was worded: “They originally wrote that ‘we will not develop a nuclear weapon.’ I said, ‘No, no, you’re not going to develop it. You’re not going to buy either.’ So we have — they will not develop, purchase, buy, or any other thing. They’re not going to acquire a nuclear weapon. If they do, all hell will rain down on them.” He denied any American investment obligation — “We are not investing any money in Iran. By the way, that rumor got out there yesterday was ridiculous. We have the right to go in someday… but we are not investing any money. We have no obligation to invest any money in Iran” — restated his standing investment figure (“almost $19.1, $19.2 trillion dollars invested in the United States”), and set an industrial target: “I think [we’ll have] 50% of the chip industry by the time I leave office. So maybe more,” with pharmaceutical production pulled home by the same tariff structure.
Why it matters
Qatar is one of the two intermediary states — with Pakistan — that carried the Iran talks, and its Emir sat with the President two days after the agreement was reached. The meeting records both halves of the relationship as the two leaders state them: the mediation debt the President acknowledges, and the $1.2 trillion partnership figure the Emir attaches to it.
Scoreboard watch
The develop-or-buy wording is the agreement’s central clause as the President describes negotiating it; this chronicle tracks the published text against that description. The Emir’s $1.2 trillion partnership figure is recorded as stated by the Emir.
