What happened
President Donald Trump met French President Emmanuel Macron at the G7 summit in Evian, France on June 15, 2026, the day after the Iran agreement was signed. Macron opened by commending him: “Yesterday was signed a very important agreement, a peace deal with Iran, and it’s a very important one because first it will fix the nuclear issue… it will reopen Hormuz, it would provide peace in Lebanon. And so we are ready to take our fair share of the burden and be part of the commitment of the international community in order to support this deal.” He set the summit’s wider agenda — Ukraine (“President Zelenskyy will be with us as well tomorrow”), rare earths, critical minerals, and trade — and noted the setting’s history: Versailles, “where the king and his minister of foreign affairs at the time did support the U.S…. and prepared what we called the Paris treaty in 1783.”
“Emmanuel has been a special friend of mine. We’ve had a fantastic relationship,” the President said. “I’m very happy to say it’s signed. The deal’s all signed and the strait is already partially opened, as you know. They’re doing a little hunting for a couple of mines that they’ve already found, but essentially ships are starting to go out now. On Friday, it’ll be completely opened.” He said he had held “very good conversations yesterday with President Zelenskyy and with President Putin, and I see maybe we can do something there… 25,000 people a month are dying, mostly soldiers, and that shouldn’t happen,” and that with the Iran agreement finished, “we’re going to be focusing on that.”
Asked when the memorandum’s text would be released, he said “probably pretty soon… sometime after Friday, because the strait opens completely.” Asked whether the deal involves sanctions relief for Iran, he answered: “No, it doesn’t. Well, they have to — it’s really a behavioral thing. If they do what they’re supposed to do, that starts taking effect.” He welcomed allied ships near the strait without requiring them — “it’s going to be open and it’s going to be toll-free” — and closed on Lebanon: “We do want to see if we can straighten out the Lebanon thing because it just seems to never end.”
Why it matters
This is the first allied-leader meeting of the summit after the signing, and it records the host’s public endorsement of the agreement — including France’s offer to share the burden of supporting it — alongside the President’s pivot to Ukraine as the next negotiation. The behavioral-sanctions answer is the fullest on-record description of the relief mechanism in this summit’s bilaterals.
Scoreboard watch
This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: the strait “completely opened” on Friday as stated, the memorandum text released sometime after Friday as stated, and sanctions relief conditioned on Iranian behavior as described — each checkable against the record.
