What happened

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation at the White House on June 11, 2026 restoring U.S. commercial fishing access to three areas of the western Pacific Ocean, joined by Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy, and commercial fishing and seafood industry leaders. “It’s my honor to be taking this action to lower seafood costs and generate millions and millions of dollars in new business for our great fishermen,” the President said. He put the reopened area at “nearly half a million square miles of water around [the] Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa,” closed under the Obama and Biden administrations while, he said, foreign fleets fished the same grounds. “This will support millions of dollars in annual harvest of big tuna, swordfish, reef fish, and many other types of fish. It will protect small local fisheries and coastal communities that depend on their livelihoods,” he said.

The President also used the event to preview the Iran agreement then in final drafting: “We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran,” he said, expecting documents finalized “over the next few days” and a signing “maybe in Europe,” with the strait to open once signed. “Most importantly, we have a deal that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon, which was the whole purpose of what we had to go through to get this.” He credited quiet nighttime Navy operations against Iranian shipping in the strait in the preceding weeks.

Why it matters

The proclamation reverses marine-monument fishing restrictions across three Pacific jurisdictions in a single signature, and the President framed it in cost terms — domestic harvest up, seafood prices down. It also carries the fullest pre-signing account he gave of the Iran settlement’s status four days before the G7 bilaterals paged in this collection.

Scoreboard watch

This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: a signature reopening ~500,000 square miles to commercial fishing, with the harvest and price effects the President predicted to be checked against NOAA fisheries data as it publishes.
