What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered his opening remarks at the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee’s hearing on the President’s fiscal year 2027 budget request for the Department of Energy, in the department’s upload of the June 10, 2026 statement. Wright presented the Genesis Mission as a nationwide mobilization of all 17 DOE national laboratories, and said the department has launched 26 national science and technology challenges spanning energy, advanced materials, biotechnology, and quantum science, as he stated them.

Wright said the first new non-light-water reactor in over four decades reached criticality on June 4, calling it the launch of the American nuclear renaissance. He said the Genesis Mission drew over 800 institutional applicants — the largest response in DOE history, twice the next largest solicitation, as he stated it — and that the department has renewed the five national quantum information science research centers, is running an incentive-based competition to demonstrate the first scientifically relevant quantum computer by 2028, and finalized a fusion science and technology roadmap, with ARPA-E committing $135 million to fusion technologies over the next 18 months, as he stated them.

Why it matters

The opening statement is the department’s FY2027 pitch in miniature: the budget request defended not as a spending document but as a scorecard — reactors critical, challenges launched, quantum and fusion programs dated — with each claim now on the congressional record for the committee to test.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: the dated commitments in Secretary Wright’s June 10, 2026 opening statement — a first scientifically relevant quantum computer by 2028 and $135 million of ARPA-E fusion funding over 18 months, as he stated them.
