What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered remarks at the Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the June 9, 2026 event, and then joined CNBC’s Brian Sullivan in conversation. Wright opened by calling energy “the most important industry in the world” — the enabler of every other industry — and defined energy dominance, in President Trump’s terms, as growing U.S. production of every form that makes economic sense, reshoring manufacturing, and exporting the surplus to friends and allies, as he presented it.

Wright said U.S. oil and natural gas production stood at all-time highs, that the United States was the world’s number one oil exporter in May at 5.4 million barrels a day — ahead of Russia and Saudi Arabia, as he stated the export data — and that the United States is by far the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas. He noted the first non-light-water reactor in over 40 years had gone critical on June 4, five days earlier. In the conversation that followed, Wright said ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was rising “very meaningfully,” and that the coordinated strategic petroleum reserve releases had been run as swaps — “we’ve not sold a single barrel” — which, he said, had already added 35 million barrels to the U.S. reserve position in the transactions, as he stated them.

Why it matters

The Atlantic Council remarks put Wright’s mid-2026 scorecard in one place, on the record, in front of the energy industry: export rankings, the reactor milestone, and the administration’s account of how it handled an oil supply shock without selling down the reserve.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: Secretary Wright’s dated claims at the June 9, 2026 Atlantic Council forum — U.S. oil exports of 5.4 million barrels a day in May, the June 4 reactor criticality, and 35 million barrels added through reserve swaps, all as he stated them.
