What happened

President Donald Trump took questions on Air Force One en route to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin on June 5, 2026. He led with the day’s employment report: “We had incredible job numbers today… far better than even anticipated,” and argued against the market convention that strong numbers signal inflation: “You don’t have to have inflation by having growth. And we have great growth. And that doesn’t mean inflation. In fact, it can be anti-inflation growth.”

Asked whether the Federal Reserve should cut rates, he deferred to the new chairman while restating his preference: “I’m going to let Kevin make that decision. I’d like to see lower interest rates because each point… is $600 [billion].” He added that markets were pricing a cut for the October meeting and “I would like to see that, but I leave that up [to him].” Asked about the Director of National Intelligence vacancy, he said he had “five interviews” underway and praised Bill Pulte, then serving in an acting capacity: “Bill Pulte is very good. He’s very talented. Done a great job at Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac.”

Why it matters

This is the President’s first extended on-camera reaction to a jobs report under Chair Warsh, and it sets the pattern this chronicle tracks on the Economy hub: public deference to the chairman paired with a stated preference for cuts and a dollar figure attached to each point. The DNI answer also dates the interview process that ended with Jay Clayton’s nomination.

Scoreboard watch

The rate-cut preference and the “$600 billion per point” figure are recorded as stated by the President; the October-meeting expectation he cited is checkable against the Federal Reserve’s 2026 record, including the September hike tracked in this chronicle.
