What happened

President Donald Trump made an energy announcement at the White House on June 4, 2026, billed by the White House as an announcement on “beautiful, clean coal,” with Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum in attendance. “As a result of the $700 million investment that I’m announcing today, we will protect 14 coal plants and 42 coal mines. It’s a tremendous number. And build two new coal plants and one massive new export terminal because we’re exporting coal,” the President said. “These actions will support over 14,000 jobs and save the American people $50 billion in electricity costs.”

He said the administration was “officially invoking the Defense Production Act to save 13 coal plants in West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, Tennessee, Arizona, Arkansas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, and Wisconsin,” with mine support across Wyoming, Pennsylvania, and other coal states. The event also ranged over the completed restoration of Washington’s fountains and reflecting pool and the Save America Act’s voter ID requirement, which the President urged the Senate to pass.
