What happened

President Donald Trump signed executive orders at the White House on June 3, 2026. As his aides described them at the signing, the first order strengthens customs enforcement “using new technologies and new approaches,” aimed at ensuring that importers of record accurately report goods moving across the border and pay the duties and tariffs required of them; the President was told it would “launch a series of bold new steps” toward “the tightest, most controlled border in American history.” A second order reforms the federal workforce: as described at the signing, policymaking positions across the departments and agencies currently sit under personnel rules that limit the ability “to effectively discipline or promote people who are in policymaking roles,” and the order follows earlier workforce orders toward “making the federal workforce more accountable.”

The President also used the event to mark the completion of the reflecting pool restoration between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial — “about 2,500 feet in length… it’s going to be beautiful” — crediting Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum’s department, and the restoration of Washington’s fountains ahead of July 4.

Why it matters

The two orders extend two of the administration’s standing programs at once: tariff and customs enforcement on the trade side, and political control of the policymaking workforce on the government-efficiency side. Both were signed the same week as the coal package and the Secure America Act, a legislative-and-orders cluster this chronicle tracks together.

Scoreboard watch

This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: two signings in one event — customs enforcement technology and workforce accountability for policymaking roles — checkable against the orders’ published texts on whitehouse.gov.
