What happened

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin held a press conference at the Dallas detention center, in the Department of Homeland Security’s upload of June 2, 2026, honoring several heroes from the 2025 Dallas ICE facility sniper attack, as the department described the event.

Mullin said the department was pausing to recognize three individuals, as he stated it, for heroic actions taken on a very dark and bad day that should never have taken place — officers who, as he described them, risked their lives for people in their custody, including people who had been arrested only hours or a day before. He contrasted that record, as he stated it, with critics he accused of demonizing ICE officers daily, arguing that the officers enforce the laws Congress mandated and that not one thing could be pointed to where they broke the Constitution, as he put it. He closed by saying law enforcement should be celebrated every day for the risks they take to make sure Americans get home safe.

Why it matters

The Dallas ceremony is Mullin’s defense of the ICE workforce in its most personal register: the Secretary standing at the facility that was attacked in 2025, honoring the officers who responded, and making the department’s case — at the site itself — that the officers under political attack are the same people who protected the detainees in their custody.
