What happened

President Donald Trump hosted the swearing-in ceremony for Kevin Warsh, the new Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, at the White House on May 22, 2026. “Today I’m thrilled to welcome you to the White House… for the swearing in of our new chairman of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, Kevin Warsh. And I expect he will go down as one of the truly great chairman of the Federal Reserves that we’ve ever had,” the President said.

He introduced Warsh’s credentials as he stated them: a public policy degree from Stanford and a law degree from Harvard, study under Milton Friedman and mentorship from George Shultz, private-sector finance and White House economic service, and, at 35, the youngest Federal Reserve governor ever appointed, followed by 15 years as a fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution. “No one in America is better prepared to lead the Federal Reserve than Kevin Warsh,” he said. The President also used the ceremony to restate his own first-year record — “the largest tax cuts in American history, the largest regulation cuts in American history, and the largest spending cuts in American history” — and a coming $1.5 trillion military budget submission.

Why it matters

Warsh’s swearing-in is the formal start of the Federal Reserve chapter this chronicle tracks on the Economy hub — the chairmanship confirmed on May 13, 2026 (see the chronicle) whose September 2026 rate hike, against the President’s stated demands for cuts, became a headline scoreboard item. This ceremony is the baseline of public goodwill from which that relationship is measured.

The ceremony itself is the record; the tracked item is the rate path that follows it, against the President’s publicly stated preference for lower rates.
