What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from the press upon arrival at Joint Base Andrews on May 20, 2026, returning from the Coast Guard Academy commencement in Connecticut. The lead topic was Cuba, on the day the Department of Justice announced the indictment of Raúl Castro: “We have big news on Cuba as you know with the indictment of Castro… I think this is a very big day, very important day.” Asked about next steps and escalation, he said there would be none: “There won’t be escalation. I don’t think there needs to be. Look, the place is falling apart… They have no oil. They have no — it’s a failing nation.” An announcement on the embargo would come “pretty soon,” he said.

On Iran, he said the decision point was close — “It could go very quickly or a few days” — and denied that oil relief had been offered: “No… I’m not doing any relief until they sign an agreement.” He stated the blockade’s numbers as he gave them: “We have 1,600 ships in the strait that are loaded up with oil that are going to be coming out very soon,” and of ships that had tried the blockade, “37 have tried. They all wish they didn’t.” He also reported a “very good call” with President Erdoğan of Turkey and, asked about Vice President Vance’s prospects, called him “very talented… He’ll do very well if it’s JD.”

Why it matters

The gaggle is the President’s first on-record reaction to the Castro indictment and fixes his stated Cuba posture — indictment welcomed, no escalation, an embargo announcement pending — alongside a dated Iran decision window. Both are tracked on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub against the announcements that followed.

Scoreboard watch

The pending embargo announcement and the “few days” Iran window are dated commitments as stated by the President; the 1,600-ship and 37-attempt blockade figures are recorded as stated.
