What happened

Vice President JD Vance briefed members of the media at the White House on May 19, 2026. He opened with an announcement — he would speak at the Air Force Academy commencement the following week (delivered May 28, 2026; see that page) — then recapped the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud: in the last couple of months, as he stated it, the task force has caught “billions upon billions of dollars of fraud in our hospice system, in our Medicaid system, in our Medicare system, and our immigration system,” and identified and stopped “hundreds of millions of dollars of fraudulent loans” through the Small Business Administration, with investigations and prosecutions underway. “Fraud is a crime that has two victims,” he said — the taxpayer, and the intended beneficiaries “when the money runs dry, because it’s gone to fraudsters.”

He then turned to Iran, fresh from a brief call with the President: “There are two options, two pathways we can go down when it comes to the Iran situation.” The first principle, he said, is that “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon” — not only for its own sake, but because a nuclear Iran would start a cascade: “a lot of nations all across the Gulf would then want their own nuclear weapon… Iran would really be the first domino” in a global arms race.

Why it matters

The May 19 briefing is the Vice President’s fullest mid-May statement of both of his tracked portfolios at once: the fraud task force’s claimed scale, in his own cumulative figures, and the administration’s Iran doctrine stated as a non-proliferation argument. Both are recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub against the summer’s developments.

Scoreboard watch

This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: the task force’s cumulative fraud figures (billions across hospice, Medicaid, Medicare, and immigration programs; hundreds of millions in SBA loans) as stated by the Vice President, checkable against agency and court records as cases publish.
