What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered remarks at the Golden Pass LNG site in Texas, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the May 15, 2026 event. Wright said he had spoken with President Trump just before the President left for China, and carried his message to the workers in the tent: “not a little thank you — a huge thank you,” because, as Wright relayed it, their daily work is transforming the country’s economy and security.

Wright traced the site’s own history: the facility was built to import natural gas when the United States could not produce enough, before the shale revolution reversed the country’s position. He said the United States is today the world’s largest exporter of natural gas “by a factor of two,” with the lead growing to a factor of three or four within ten years, as he stated it, and that oil and natural gas together supply 75 percent of the energy the United States consumes. He also said all six New England governors had told him in two meetings that their region needs more natural gas and the pipeline to deliver it, as he described the meetings.

Why it matters

Golden Pass is Wright’s reversal story in one facility: built for imports in an era of scarcity, now part of the export build-out he credits with making natural gas America’s fastest-growing export — and the workforce audience is the same one he thanks in Midland and Houston for making the country’s supply promises to allies credible.
