What happened
Vice President JD Vance held a press conference on the fraud task force’s anti-fraud initiatives at the White House on May 13, 2026, while the President was traveling in China. “We’ve been hard at work over the last several months trying to make sure that we take care of the people’s money,” he said, framing fraud’s two victims: the taxpayer who funds the programs, and the beneficiary who receives less because of what fraud has taken.
The first announcement: “the federal government is deferring $1.3 billion in Medicaid reimbursements from the state of California,” because, as the Vice President stated it, California has not taken fraud seriously — including cases of people given medications they did not need by fraudulent providers. The second: letters were going out that day to all 50 state Medicaid programs requiring them to show they are effectively and aggressively prosecuting Medicaid fraud, with the federal money for state anti-fraud control units to be turned off for states that do not — and other Medicaid resources at risk after that. He contrasted prosecution rates across states, cited Ohio and Maryland as states working with the administration, and pointed to home health and hospice care as a further fraud front that Dr. Mehmet Oz would address, closing with the task force’s principle as he stated it: the programs belong to Americans first, and the administration will “turn off the money when we find out that money is going to fraud.”
Why it matters
This is the fraud task force’s Medicaid enforcement turn: a named state, a named deferred sum, and a 50-state compliance demand with a funding consequence attached — the dated baseline against which state responses and any actual funding actions are tracked on the Fraud, Waste & Corruption hub.
Scoreboard watch
This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: the $1.3 billion California Medicaid deferral and the 50-state prosecution letters, each as stated at the press conference, to be checked against CMS correspondence and state responses as they publish.
