What happened

President Donald Trump took questions upon departing Palm Beach, Florida, on May 2, 2026, en route to Doral. On Iran, he said Tehran “wants to make a deal. They’re decimated,” and that he was still reviewing the exact wording of a proposal. Asked about the share of Iran’s missile-making capability eliminated — put to him at 85 percent — he said of the remainder: “I’d like to eliminate it. Yeah, I’d like to. It’ll be a start for them to build up again.”

On his letter to Congress stating that hostilities had terminated while the naval blockade continued, he called it “a very friendly blockade. Nobody’s even challenging it,” and argued congressional war-powers pressure was “hurting our negotiating ability.” He said American energy companies operating inside Iran “could be” a future outcome, pointed to lines of oil tankers bound for Texas and Louisiana, and said Germany troop cuts would go “a lot further than 5,000.”

Why it matters

The gaggle fixes the President’s May 2 posture on the three live files — an Iran deal under word-by-word review, a blockade defended as non-hostile, and a Germany drawdown larger than the figure in circulation — days before the Hormuz confrontation escalated, on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.

Scoreboard watch

The statements as made by the President — a possible elimination of Iran’s remaining missile-making capacity, and Germany troop cuts beyond 5,000 — are recorded here as the baseline for both files.
