What happened

President Donald Trump delivered remarks on the night of April 25, 2026, hours after a gunman attacked a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. “A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons and he was taken down by some very brave members of Secret Service and they acted very quickly,” he said, noting he had ordered video of the attack and the response released “for purposes of transparency.” One officer was shot at close range with a powerful gun and saved by his bulletproof vest: “I just spoke to the officer and he’s doing great. He is in great shape. He has very high spirits.”

The President placed the attack in the line of attempts on his life — “in Butler, Pennsylvania, less than two years ago… and in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close” — and asked Americans to “recommit with their hearts in resolving our differences peacefully.” He said he had fought to stay at the dinner (“I fought like hell to stay, but they — it was protocol”) and announced the remedy: the dinner would be held again “within the next 30 days and we’ll make it bigger and better and even nicer… We’re not going to let anybody take over our society.” He also argued the attack made the case for the White House ballroom: “it’s not a particularly secure building… we need the ballroom. That’s why Secret Service, that’s why the military are demanding it.” Attorney General Todd Blanche then addressed the investigation, saying the public would see “law enforcement do exactly what they’re supposed to do,” with FBI Director Kash Patel also set to speak.

Why it matters

These remarks are the President’s own account of the third attack in the sequence the White House counts — delivered the same night, with the rescheduling pledge and the ballroom-security argument that both recur in this chronicle (the rescheduled dinner was held July 24, 2026). They are recorded on the Justice & Crime hub with the Press Secretary’s April 27 briefing as the follow-on record.

The pledge as stated by the President — the Correspondents’ Dinner to be re-held within 30 days, bigger — is recorded here; the rescheduled dinner of July 24, 2026 in this collection is its follow-through.
