What happened

President Donald Trump held a health care affordability event in the Oval Office on April 23, 2026, announcing that Regeneron had agreed to offer its prescription medications at most-favored-nation prices. “With this announcement, 17 of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, representing 80% of the branded drug market, have now agreed to sell their drugs to American patients at the lowest prices anywhere in the world,” he said, calling the program “the biggest price reduction in drugs in history.”

He framed the underlying imbalance as he stated it: the United States is 4% of the world’s population and 13% of prescription drug consumption, yet the companies make 75% of their profits from American customers.
