What happened

President Donald Trump delivered remarks on Tax Week in Las Vegas, Nevada, opening after Lee Greenwood’s performance of “God Bless the USA.” “We’re going to be talking about no tax on tips,” he said. “And this is the birthplace of a little idea known as No Tax on Tips. A young waitress came up to me during dinner and she said, ‘Sir, we should have no tax on tips.’ I said, ‘That’s the greatest thing I’ve ever heard.’”

He described Las Vegas as “the home of the largest concentration of tipped workers anywhere in the country, anywhere in the world, actually,” and said that “thanks to our tax cuts this week, thousands of Nevada waiters, waitresses, casino dealers, bartenders, bellmen, barbers, caddies, and valets receive the biggest tax refunds of their entire lives.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent joined him at the event, along with Nevada and visiting officials the President thanked from the stage. He called the tax law “the great big beautiful tax cut bill,” saying “the tax cuts are enormous.”

Why it matters

The Las Vegas remarks are the President’s Tax Week set piece in the city where his signature tips pledge originated — the campaign promise restated as delivered policy to the workforce it names, recorded on the Economy, Tariffs & Trade hub alongside the April 15 Tax Day briefing.
