What happened
Energy Secretary Chris Wright joined Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin at the groundbreaking for the NESE pipeline expansion at Floyd Bennett Field in New York, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the April 14, 2026 event. Burgum, introducing Wright, credited the administration’s partnership across the three agencies with supporting President Trump’s energy dominance agenda, and cited household energy savings of over $1,000 per household from the pipeline’s delivery of cheaper gas, as he stated it.
Wright described the project as “a battle that began almost a decade ago” to expand natural gas supply from Pennsylvania into New York, so New Yorkers and Long Islanders can have lower bills and greater job opportunities. He contrasted the U.S. and European economies over 16 years — the United States now more than 50 percent larger, a divergence he attributed to Europe getting energy wrong — and said the Constitution Pipeline is next, to serve Upstate New York and all six New England states, as he presented the plan. Zeldin, a Long Islander, called the NESE delivery “a pure, momentous, gigantic win for New York and for America,” and said the pipeline’s capacity can deliver natural gas to up to 2.3 million more families, as he stated it.
Why it matters
NESE is the administration’s energy-addition doctrine made physical in the state that blocked it for a decade: three cabinet principals on one stage, a named next project (Constitution), and the New England supply argument Wright makes in Washington carried to the groundbreaking itself.
