What happened

Vice President JD Vance delivered remarks at a Turning Point USA tour event at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, on April 14, 2026, in an on-stage conversation with Andrew Kolvet. Kolvet hosted in place of Erika Kirk, who, he said, had “received some very serious threats in her direction.” Vance said he had spoken with the Secret Service about two hours earlier and told them: “Let’s let Erika do what she needs to do for herself and her family. I’m sure Andrew will fill in, and let’s go and make this an amazing event with the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Georgia.”

Much of the conversation was a remembrance of Charlie Kirk, who was killed on September 10, as Kolvet dated it — “the day right before September 11th,” as the Vice President put it. Vance described flying to Utah to bring Kirk’s body home and meeting Erika and the family there: “The past six or so months have been two separate living hells for Erika Kirk. The first is, of course, that she lost her husband, she lost the father of her children.” He recalled her telling him, of her two young children, “I really wish that we had had more babies together,” and reflected on fatherhood — his own six-year-old’s baptism on Easter Sunday and his wife’s pregnancy with their fourth child, announced from the stage to applause.

Why it matters

The Athens event is the Vice President’s longest on-record remembrance of Charlie Kirk in this chronicle, delivered on the tour Kirk built, under the security shadow that kept his widow off the stage — recorded on the Elections & Governance hub.
