What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from the press at Joint Base Andrews on April 10, 2026; the published broadcast begins partway into an answer. “They’re militarily defeated. And now we’re going to open up the Gulf with them or without them — or the strait, as they call it. And I think it’s going to go pretty quickly. And if it doesn’t, we’ll be able to finish it off one way or the other,” he said. “The Navy’s gone, the Air Force is gone, all anti-aircraft is gone, the leaders are gone, the whole place is gone. So we’ll see how it turns out. So it’s JD and Steve and Jared. They have a good team, and they meet tomorrow. We’ll see how it all works.”

Asked what a good deal would look like: “No nuclear weapons. You know, I think it’s already been regime change, but we never had that as a criteria. No nuclear weapon. That’s 99% of it.” On the strait: “That’ll open up automatically… If we just left, the strait’s going to open. Otherwise they make no money.” Asked for his backup plan: “You don’t need a backup plan. Their military is gone… We have degraded just about everything. They have very few missiles. They have very little manufacturing capability. We’ve hit them hard.” On whether the Islamabad round would be one-and-done: “I don’t know. I can’t tell you. I have to see what happens tomorrow… They’ve been talking for 47 years with other presidents, and we’re not doing much talking.”

Why it matters

The April 10 gaggle fixes the President’s definition of a good deal — no nuclear weapons as “99% of it” — on the eve of the Islamabad round, and names the team carrying it: the Vice President, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner. It is recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.

The no-nuclear-weapons definition and the prediction that the strait opens regardless, as stated by the President, are recorded here against the talks’ outcome.
