What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered a keynote at the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the April 7, 2026 event, addressing the scientists, entrepreneurs, and investors the agency funds. Wright called ARPA-E “a bold idea 17 years ago” that has become “massively more than that,” and told the room that energy “is foundational to everything humans do” — harder than semiconductors, because it deals in friction and mass, but the most important industry in the world.

Wright described artificial intelligence as “energy for the human brain,” arguing it will accelerate human capability rather than replace humans, and that his job is to make sure energy supply lets AI “go ahead at full speed.” On climate, he said climate change is “a real thing” and “a true physical phenomenon” he has studied for 20 years, but that treating it as the world’s only problem produced what he called the greatest malinvestment in history — spending that did not expand energy access or lift people from poverty. He then joined AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su in an on-stage conversation later in the session.

Why it matters

The ARPA-E keynote is Wright speaking to his own innovation agency’s community: the administration’s research arm told, by its Secretary, that its mission is more energy — with AI’s power demands as the forcing case and climate policy re-ranked, not denied, in his ordering of problems.
