What happened
Vice President JD Vance held a joint press conference with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Budapest on April 7, 2026. Orbán opened by marking the visit’s weight: “The last time a Vice President from the US visited Hungary was 35 years ago… With the election of President Trump, I believe a golden era has been ushered in in our relations.” Vance was direct about his purpose: “I want to help as much as I possibly can the Prime Minister as he faces this election season, which I believe is happening in just about a week… I did want to send a signal to everybody, particularly the bureaucrats in Brussels who have done everything that they can to hold down the people of Hungary.” He called Orbán “the single most profound leader in Europe on the question of energy security and independence,” and said that when the two sat down, “we didn’t talk about politics. We talked about… five things that we need that the Hungarian people need from the United States in order to further our partnership.”
On Ukraine, Vance credited Orbán as “one of the few that’s been wise and smart about the conflict,” and put the administration’s question to Europe: “What is the alternative to peace? Is it to continue feeding young men into this terrible, terrible war… or is it to get serious about diplomacy?” Orbán described Hungary’s exposure — a blockaded Russian gas pipeline fended off via TurkStream, and an oil pipeline “blockaded” shortly before the elections, forcing Hungary to tap reserves. Asked about Iran, Vance laid out “two pathways”: “The United States has largely accomplished its military objectives… Fundamentally, the military objectives of the United States have been accomplished,” with the President’s deadline — “he’s given them until Tuesday at 8:00” — unchanged by the Kharg Island reporting. He closed the politics where he began: “Viktor Orbán is going to win the next election in Hungary, so I feel very confident about that.”
Why it matters
The press conference pairs the campaign endorsement with the working agenda — energy security against pipeline blockades, diplomacy over escalation in Ukraine, and the Iran deadline — stated jointly by the Vice President and the Prime Minister. It is recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub with the Vice President’s Budapest remarks the same day.
