What happened

Vice President JD Vance swore in Colin McDonald as Assistant Attorney General at the White House on April 1, 2026, in a ceremony framed by the administration’s anti-fraud task force. The introduction stated the mission plainly: America “has a fraud crisis,” and McDonald — “a brilliant career prosecutor from California who’s worked for our brilliant deputy attorney general for the last year” and who “has prosecuted fraud cases, guns and drugs, political corruption” — was sworn in “to restore deterrence, to make sure people are afraid to commit fraud because they are afraid of the consequences and to make sure that people who do commit fraud go to jail where they belong.”

Vance explained why a new post was needed: because the government “had never really focused in such a holistic way on eliminating the fraud that’s being committed against American taxpayers, we actually needed a new division within the Department” of Justice. McDonald, in his remarks, thanked the President, the Vice President, the Attorney General, and the Deputy Attorney General “for having the vision to create this new division to ensure that the American taxpayer is protected.”

Why it matters

The swearing-in stands up the Justice Department’s dedicated fraud division under a named prosecutor — the enforcement arm of the fraud task force the Vice President leads — recorded on the Fraud, Waste & Corruption hub.
