What happened
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on election integrity at the White House on March 31, 2026, at a meeting on, in his words, “voter integrity and mail in ballots and stopping the massive cheating that’s gone on… we’re going to be signing an executive order. I believe it’s foolproof.” Staff Secretary Will Scharf explained the mechanics as the administration states them: “We’re going to take federal data. We’re going to ensure that each state’s election officials are provided with a comprehensive view of who the eligible voters in their jurisdiction actually are, allowing them to properly verify that everybody voting in their elections is legally able to vote.” The order also directs the Postmaster General and the Postal Service “to take bold new measures to verify that ballots both being sent to people are being sent to people who are eligible to vote and then the ballots being returned are being properly returned by eligible voters only.”
After signing, the President anticipated a legal fight and welcomed it on his terms: “I don’t know how it can be challenged… remember, it’s about voter integrity. We want to have honest voting in our country because if you don’t have honest voting, you can’t have really a nation.” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also spoke at the meeting, per the broadcast.
Why it matters
The March 31 order is the administration’s election-integrity action of record for the spring — federal eligibility data to state officials, plus Postal Service verification of mailed ballots in both directions — recorded on the Elections & Governance hub ahead of the midterm cycle.
Scoreboard watch
This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: a signing, with its two stated mechanisms (the federal-data view for state officials; Postal Service ballot verification) checkable against the order’s text and its court challenges.
