What happened
President Donald Trump took questions from the press aboard Air Force One en route to Joint Base Andrews on March 29, 2026. “We’ve had very good negotiations today with Iran. Getting a lot of the things that they should have given us a long time ago. We’ll see how it works out. But they’re very good. Moving along very nicely,” he said. “We are negotiating with them directly and indirectly. We have emissaries but we also are dealing directly.”
He described what he called Iran’s proof of seriousness — oil moving through the strait: “They’ve agreed to send eight boats two days ago and then they added another two so it was 10 boats and now today they gave us, as a tribute… 20 boats of oil, big boats of oil going through the Hormuz Strait and that’s taking place starting tomorrow morning over the next couple of days.” He paired the optimism with the standing caution: “You never know with Iran because we negotiate with them and then we always have to blow them up,” citing the terminated Obama-era nuclear deal and the B-2 strikes. Additional targets, he said, had been destroyed that day: “The Navy’s gone. The Air Force is gone. We destroyed many, many targets today. It was a big day.”
Why it matters
The March 29 gaggle is the first on-record statement that direct and indirect negotiations were underway and that tanker traffic through Hormuz was being used as the talks’ confidence measure — the thread that leads to the April ceasefire. It is recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.
