What happened

Vice President JD Vance opened a meeting of the administration’s anti-fraud task force on March 27, 2026, with what he joked was “half the cabinet” in the room, including new Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins. He singled out Colin McDonald, the Justice Department’s new anti-fraud leader — “confirmed, but not yet sworn in to his new position at the Department of Justice” — as “maybe the most exciting thing that’s actually happened on the fraud task force,” because the effort now has a leader at DOJ “who is going to work with the task force… to really supercharge this anti-fraud effort.”

The Vice President laid out the plan: anti-fraud protections he said the prior administration turned off would be turned back on, and the departments would work as one — “when Bobby Kennedy is talking to Scott Bessent about things that he’s seeing in Medicare and Medicaid… we’re going to actually force the bureaucracy to take this seriously.” He cited the Minnesota autism-services program as his example of fraud as a double theft: of taxpayers, and of “families who need these services, who are unable to get them because people are getting rich off of fraud schemes.”

Andrew Ferguson, who leads the task force, said its work is “to develop a comprehensive national strategy to combat the corruption of our federal benefits programs, and to assist the Department of Justice in prosecuting those who have corrupted them,” calling fraud against the programs a crisis that “shreds the social trust on which these programs and our entire nation depend.” Stephen Miller argued the benefit systems run without verification — “all of these programs are operated entirely on the honor system” — and said Minnesota has refused to turn over its SNAP enrollment rolls, as he stated it.

Why it matters

This is the task force in session rather than at a podium: the meeting is the moment the Vance-led fraud effort Vance has headlined since its launch shows its working structure — a named DOJ anti-fraud chief, a task force lead, and a cross-department mandate. McDonald was sworn in by Vance five days later, on April 1. It is recorded on the Fraud, Waste & Corruption hub.

Scoreboard watch

The task force’s stand-up with its DOJ leadership in place, and the national anti-fraud strategy Ferguson described, are recorded here as a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard.
