What happened
President Donald Trump hosted the annual Greek Independence Day celebration at the White House on March 26, 2026, telling Archbishop Elpidophoros — “a truly respected man of faith and a pillar of the Greek American community” — that “I wouldn’t miss it.” He wished “all of the Greek American patriots here this afternoon… a very happy Greek Independence Day.”
The President introduced the Greek Americans serving in his administration, including Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios and Deputy Secretary of State Michael Rigas, along with White House staff and members of Congress. He welcomed the ambassador of Greece and the ambassador of Cyprus, and brought U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to the podium: “She’s an inspiration to a lot of people… I heard they love you over there.”
He traced the relationship from the founding — “when America declared our independence 250 years ago, our founding fathers drew profound inspiration from the example of ancient Greece” — and drew a present-day line from Athens: “under the Trump administration, we’re reaffirming a sacred Greek principle that goes all the way back to a rocky hillside in the heart of ancient Athens, that only citizens can vote in our elections.” He also pointed to classical architecture and the new White House ballroom as Greek-inspired building revived.
Why it matters
The annual celebration is a fixture of the White House ethnic-heritage calendar, and this year’s edition doubled as a showcase of the Greek Americans in senior administration roles and a restatement — in a ceremonial setting — of the citizens-only voting principle behind the Save America Act push. It is recorded on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.
