What happened
President Donald Trump hosted the swearing-in ceremony for Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin on March 24, 2026. “It’s a great day for me because I have a lot of confidence in the gentleman,” the President said. “Markwayne, congratulations. You deserve it.”
The President ran through Mullin’s record as he stated it: 13 years representing Oklahoma in the House and Senate; a state the President said he carried in all 77 counties three times in a row; “the only Native American in the Senate,” a member of the Cherokee Nation and an advocate for tribal communities; a family business taken over at age 20 and built into a multimillion-dollar success; and an undefeated run as an MMA fighter and Oklahoma wrestling hall of famer — “I won’t wrestle him for anything.” Attorney General Pam Bondi was among the officials the President thanked for attending.
He turned to the department Mullin takes over: “the department that Markwayne takes over today is currently shut down by radical left Democrat thugs in Congress that have blocked all funding for DHS,” as he stated it, arguing the fight is over shielding “illegal alien criminals” from removal. He tied the stakes to a killing he described from that week — an 18-year-old college student shot in Chicago, with a Venezuelan national who had entered illegally charged, as the President stated it — and to the border record he says Mullin helped build in Congress, “work[ing] with Tom Homan” to secure the border.
Why it matters
The ceremony seats the administration’s second Homeland Security secretary of the term — confirmed after Kristi Noem’s March departure, as this chronicle’s timeline records — at the head of a department already weeks into a funding lapse that shapes everything DHS does this spring. It is recorded on the Border & Immigration hub.
