What happened

Vice President JD Vance delivered remarks in Auburn Hills, Michigan, on March 18, 2026, introduced by EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. Zeldin framed the administration’s regulatory program for the auto audience: an end to electric vehicle mandates and a reset of CAFE standards with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, and what he called the largest act of deregulation in American history — rescinding the 2009 endangerment finding — saying the EPA would finalize more deregulation in one year than entire governments had done across all agencies, as he stated it.

Vance joked that, as an Ohio State alumnus, calling Michigan “the hardest working state anywhere in the union with the best workers” was hard for him to say, then made the administration’s auto case: the prior administration, he said, was “waging war against our American automakers” with thousands of pages of new regulations. On Canada, he argued the tariff policy is “basic fairness”: “if you’re going to apply a tariff to our goods, we’re going to start applying a tariff to your goods, too.” He closed on the administration’s broader record as he stated it — the border shut, taxes lowered, and the lowest murder rate in history.

Why it matters

Auburn Hills is auto country, and the pairing was the message: the EPA administrator who rescinded the endangerment finding introducing the Vice President in Michigan, selling deregulation and tariff fairness as one auto-jobs program. It is recorded on the Economy, Tariffs & Trade hub.
