What happened

President Donald Trump opened a lunch meeting of the Trump Kennedy Center board at the White House on March 16, 2026, with the press present — “this is a board meeting for the Trump Kennedy Center, but we’ll go into a couple of other things.” He began with the Iran campaign as he stated it: more than 7,000 targets struck, a 90 percent reduction in ballistic missile launches and a 95 percent reduction in drone attacks, more than 100 Iranian naval vessels sunk or destroyed, and strikes on Kharg Island that destroyed everything “except for the area where the oil is. I call it the pipes. We left the pipes.”

On the center itself, the President claimed “a very dramatic and quick turnaround” under the new board: DEI programming removed, “patriotic and family friendly programming” brought back, and, as he stated the figures, over $130 million raised last year to keep the institution going and a record $23 million from the Trump Kennedy Center Honors alone — “double what they had ever done before.” He said the previous management left the facility “in very bad condition,” with major renovations to come during a construction period.

Why it matters

The lunch is the President chairing his cultural-institution project in public: war update first, then the center’s books as he presents them — fundraising records and a renovation program that are the board’s case for the takeover. It is recorded on the Elections & Governance hub.
