What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright joined Congressman Gabe Evans for a press conference in Colorado, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the March 9, 2026 event, hosted at the Fort St. Vrain generating site in Evans’s district. Evans, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said the district holds Colorado’s two largest natural gas facilities and its only oil refineries, and cited the Colorado Energy Office’s own study putting the cost of the state’s energy policies at $61 billion above the current baseline, as he stated the figure.

Wright, a Colorado native, said he and Evans share a simple agenda in Washington: lower the cost of energy and raise wages. He said Colorado is the nation’s fourth-largest oil-producing state and seventh-largest natural gas producer, and that the United States — the world’s largest importer of oil and natural gas 20 years ago — is today by far the world’s largest net exporter of natural gas. On electricity, he said the 28 states with renewable portfolio standards have electricity prices 50 percent higher on average than the 22 states without them, and that California’s prices are twice Colorado’s, as he stated the comparisons — while Colorado, he argued, is adopting California’s policies.

Why it matters

The Colorado press conference is Wright’s state-level case against mandate-driven electricity policy, delivered in his home state beside the congressman who carries the same agenda on Energy and Commerce: portfolio standards presented as the variable that separates high-price states from low-price ones.
