What happened
Energy Secretary Chris Wright addressed the United Nations Security Council, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the March 5, 2026 session, thanking Ambassador Waltz for inviting him to lead a U.S.-chaired conversation on critical minerals, energy, and resources. Wright opened with gratitude to the American military and a condemnation of the Iranian regime, which he said has for 47 years spread chaos and instability; President Trump has been clear, he said — Iran’s regime will not prevail.
Wright argued the session’s topic is fundamental to prosperity and peace: “We need more energy, not less energy. And we need it now.” Only a billion people, he said, live lives recognizable to those in the room, seven billion aspire to them, and the only road there is massively more energy — while two billion people still cook and heat with wood, charcoal, or dung indoors, with indoor air pollution killing over two million people a year, as he cited the estimate. He closed by urging nations to safeguard the world’s energy and natural resource supply — keeping trade lanes from the Panama Canal to the Red Sea to the Strait of Hormuz open — so shared prosperity cannot be threatened by malign adversaries.
Why it matters
The Security Council address is Wright’s energy-abundance doctrine delivered as American diplomacy at the UN’s top table: critical minerals and energy framed as security issues, chaired by the Energy Secretary rather than a diplomat, with the Iran confrontation and the clean-cooking toll carried in the same speech.
