What happened

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett spoke to reporters outside the White House on February 25, 2026, the morning after the President’s State of the Union address, in Roll Call Factbase Videos’ recording. On the retirement account the President had described the night before, Hassett said the administration had been working closely with Treasury, that the account could be stood up right away, and that the saver’s match program passed in 2022 and beginning in 2027 had needed a complete revamp to work — work his team had done with Treasury, as he stated it.

On housing, Hassett said the President was focused ’like a laser beam’ on the sector, restated the address’s pledge to end institutional investors buying homes — putting their share at 20% of homes in some cities, as he stated it — and said mortgage costs had already been reduced by about $4,000 per family.

Why it matters

The gaggle is the morning-after implementation record for two of the State of the Union’s domestic pledges: the retirement account’s mechanics and the housing program, explained by the official charged with coordinating both.
