What happened
Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick joined a World Economic Forum panel on the global economy and finance in Davos, Switzerland, on January 20, 2026, alongside British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, and Bank of America chairman and CEO Brian Moynihan, in DWS News’ full carry of the session. The panel’s hardest exchange concerned sovereignty and Greenland: the moderator pressed Lutnick on how the administration imagined its Danish counterpart reacting when the question of Greenland’s territory was coupled so directly to tariffs — “a fundamental shock to the system,” as the moderator described the reaction among European politicians and business leaders at Davos.
Lutnick defended the America First model across the session: the United States wants partners that are resilient, and foreign companies building in America — the panel discussed foreign chipmakers building major U.S. fabrication plants, in Syracuse and elsewhere, without becoming U.S. companies — rather than production remaining offshore. In related Davos remarks carried the same week, Lutnick argued that globalization had failed Western economies, weakening domestic industry and leaving nations vulnerable to global shocks, as APT’s coverage of his Davos appearance summarized his position. Panelists from allied governments urged the administration to consider how allies could help it achieve its objectives — the attributed allied pushback that ran through the session.
Why it matters
Davos is where the Lutnick trade agenda meets its counterparties in public. The panel records the Commerce Secretary making the America First case — reshoring, tariffs as leverage, partners building inside the United States — directly to the finance ministers of two allies then in open tariff disputes with Washington, and records their answers on the same stage. It is the diplomatic counterpart to his congressional testimony: the same doctrine, defended abroad.
