What happened
Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered remarks at the United States Energy Association, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the January 15, 2026 event. Wright summarized the President’s energy policy in the phrase he used from the podium — prosperity at home and peace abroad — arguing that affordable, reliable, secure energy is what allows the country to re-industrialize, lead in AI, and lower costs, while energy dominance beyond independence makes the United States the reliable supplier for friends and allies now dependent on adversaries.
Reviewing the administration’s first year, Wright said that when it was inaugurated the United States was issuing no new permits for LNG export terminals, and that the administration has since issued more permits for new LNG export terminals than the export capacity that existed when it arrived, as he stated the comparison. He pledged that natural gas will continue to grow rapidly worldwide, that the United States will remain by far the biggest producer and exporter of natural gas, and that Europe will be helped the rest of the way off Russian gas. On nuclear power, he promised the long-discussed renaissance will now be launched, and he named electricity — flat for two decades while oil production tripled and gas production doubled, as he stated the figures — as the system’s biggest challenge.
Why it matters
The USEA address is Wright’s first-year report card stated as doctrine: LNG permitting as the proof point, natural gas as the growth fuel, a nuclear renaissance as the pledge, and electricity supply as the acknowledged bottleneck — the Energy Secretary’s own ordering of what his department has done and what it has not yet solved.
Scoreboard watch
Scoreboard watch: Secretary Wright’s first-year claims at the United States Energy Association on January 15, 2026 — more LNG export terminal permits issued than the export capacity in place when the administration arrived, and a nuclear renaissance pledged — all as he stated them. Flagged for the scoreboard editor; no entry is published from this page.
