What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered remarks on affordability in northeastern Pennsylvania, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the December 9, 2025 event, opening with the state’s energy history — anthracite coal, Titusville’s first oil well, and the Marcellus shale, which he called the greatest shale gas on the planet. Wright said the prior administration had waged a four-year war on energy that drove up prices and inflation, and presented President Trump’s views as simple: more energy is better, American energy better than foreign, lower prices better than higher.

Wright said the President had signed the Genesis Mission a little over a week earlier, a major initiative for the United States to lead in AI, and credited the administration with stopping coal plant closures and reaching record high oil and natural gas production. On prices, he said electricity prices in Democrat-controlled states are 75 percent higher than in Republican-led states, as he stated the comparison — arguing that states able to build infrastructure and welcome demand growth, factories, and data centers are the ones with flat or declining electricity prices, while California, New York, and Massachusetts produce less electricity than five years ago with skyrocketing prices, as he stated it.

Why it matters

The Pennsylvania remarks compress Wright’s affordability case into a single state: the state that built American industrial strength, in his telling, deserves a more prosperous future — and the route runs through pipelines for Pennsylvania gas, open plants, and demand growth rather than restriction.
