What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright gave remarks at the Special Competitive Studies Project’s AI + Fusion Summit, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the October 14, 2025 conversation. Wright said the department had released its fusion science and technology roadmap that day, designed with Under Secretary for Science Dario Gil to be synergistic with commercial efforts rather than competitive with them — the department adding what only it can add to speed the realization of fusion’s promise, which he called gigantic.

Wright, who worked on fusion 40 years ago, said the field is near because AI is a tremendous enabling technology for fusion and fusion will in turn supercharge AI — and because commercial money, impatient and spread across many approaches, is now in the game. He assessed China’s effort as serious: four separate centers and close to $10 billion spent since 2019, as he stated the figure — but without the commercial sector the United States has. He credited the national labs’ breakthroughs, including the National Ignition Facility’s energy gain at the target rising from above one to over four, as he stated it, and pointed to shared lab problems such as materials that survive high-energy neutrons as the place government accelerates the commercial field.

Why it matters

The SCSP conversation is Wright’s fusion strategy stated in full on the day its roadmap dropped: DOE as accelerator rather than competitor, the labs solving the shared problems, and the race framed explicitly against China’s state-funded program — with commercial capital named as America’s structural advantage.
