What happened
Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum held a press conference at Gastech 2025 in Milan, Italy, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the September 10, 2025 event. Burgum, who chairs the National Energy Dominance Council on which Wright serves as vice chair, summarized United States energy policy in two words — peace and prosperity — arguing that selling energy to friends and allies displaces the energy revenues that fund wars and terrorism, and that innovation, not regulation, is the path forward into an AI-driven demand cycle.
Wright pointed to the recently signed European Union–United States trade deal and its commitment, as he described it, for the European Union to buy more American energy as Europe closes itself off from Russian supply. He called natural gas the fastest growing energy source on the planet — more than 35 percent of the world’s growth from 500 to 600 exajoules over 15 years came from gas, as he stated the figures — and said the United States will end 33 years of subsidizing wind and solar and let them compete in the marketplace. In questions, Burgum addressed offshore wind, saying the era of mass subsidies has ended by law and that the administration is reviewing each project on a whole-of-government basis.
Why it matters
Milan is the NEDC’s two leaders selling the same doctrine together abroad: American energy as the substitute for Russian supply in Europe, with the EU trade deal as the vehicle — and the subsidy rollback defended in front of the investors it affects.
