What happened

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced Feed It Onward at Scott Air Force Base on September 9, 2025 — a new national initiative designed to reduce food waste and strengthen food security across America, according to the EPA’s description of the launch. In his remarks, as delivered in the EPA’s upload, Zeldin said the amount of food wasted across the country needs to be cut down, citing an EPA report from this year, “Estimating the Cost of Food Waste to Consumers,” for the figures he stated: a family of four wastes nearly $3,000 worth of food each year, representing approximately 11% of their total household spend on food.

Zeldin said the program being announced at Scott Air Force Base will hopefully serve as an inspiration for other farms across the country — food that would otherwise end up in a landfill instead being shared with families who want it, as he described it. He closed by saying the EPA is honored to be part of it.

Why it matters

Food waste sits on both sides of the EPA’s mission — landfill volume and methane on the environmental side, and food security on the household side. Feed It Onward is the Zeldin EPA’s named initiative on the issue, launched at a military installation with a farm-to-family sharing model the Administrator presented as a template for farms nationally.
