What happened

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett spoke to reporters outside the White House on July 30, 2025 — his second gaggle of the afternoon — in Roll Call Factbase Videos’ recording. Hassett said import prices had dropped dramatically since the tariffs started, a sign, as President Trump had suggested and as Hassett stated it, that foreign countries and foreign companies would bear a lot of the tariff cost. He cited $127 billion in revenue raised already and inflation down, with PCE inflation at 2.1% in the day’s GDP release as he stated it, and said real wages in that release grew at a 3% rate.

Asked about a decline in capital formation in the release, Hassett said manufacturers had held up construction because they wanted to be able to expense the facilities after the Big Beautiful Bill passed — an explanation he offered for the dip. On the Fed succession, he said the President had asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to lead a thorough process and present options.

Why it matters

The short gaggle is Hassett’s cleanest statement of the tariff-incidence case — import prices falling, $127 billion collected, real wages outrunning prices — tied to the expensing explanation for soft investment.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: Hassett’s July 30, 2025 figures as stated — $127 billion in tariff revenue, PCE inflation at 2.1%, real wages growing at a 3% rate — flagged for the scoreboard editors; the entry itself remains review-gated.
