What happened

Deputy Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling described the Department of Labor’s AI workforce work in a department message released on July 24, 2025. He stated that within President Trump’s first 100 days, the President signed an executive order around AI literacy that requires the Department of Education, the Department of Labor, and the National Science Foundation to come together to identify the systemic challenges within the education system and the workforce training system — to make sure U.S. workers get the first opportunities at AI jobs, with the underlying baseline skills those jobs require, as he framed it.

Sonderling said the department is working with employers in the United States, asking them to identify where the jobs are going — what the AI jobs of the future are — and how the American worker can benefit by being trained for them, as he described the effort.

Why it matters

The statement is the Labor Department’s piece of the administration’s AI literacy order as its Deputy Secretary described it: an interagency brief shared with Education and the National Science Foundation, run through employer demand — train workers for the AI jobs employers say are coming, with first opportunity for U.S. workers.
