What happened
Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered remarks at the AI and Advanced Nuclear Reactor Summit at Argonne National Laboratory, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the July 17, 2025 event. Wright traced the arc of energy density — wood, peat, coal, oil, natural gas — and named nuclear as the step that trajectory pointed to next, before it was knocked off track: nuclear was six percent of global energy in 2000 and is four percent today, as he stated the shares, shrunk in wealthy countries while growing in China, India, and developing nations.
Wright argued the largest limiter on AI is now power production — where data centers can be built — and that nuclear must be gotten back in gear both for AI’s electricity demand and for the larger prize of process heat for steel, plastics, fertilizer, and materials. He put the spending on wind, solar, and batteries at somewhere between three and eight trillion dollars, as he stated the range, for three percent of global primary energy in return, and framed the labs that began with nuclear technology and computing as the institutions where the two fields now recombine.
Why it matters
Argonne is where Wright fuses his two signature campaigns — the nuclear revival and the AI build-out — into a single argument: energy density is destiny, nuclear is its highest form, and the national labs are the instrument. The summit remarks are the doctrine behind the reactor and lab announcements that followed.
Scoreboard watch
Scoreboard watch: Secretary Wright’s nuclear-share figures at Argonne on July 17, 2025 — six percent of global energy in 2000, four percent today, as he stated them — and his commitment to return nuclear to growth for AI power and industrial heat.
