What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Ramaco’s Brook Mine in Wyoming, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the July 11, 2025 event, alongside Wyoming’s elected leaders. Wright brought the President’s thanks and framed Wyoming — founded on bold pioneers and true grit, as he put it — as the mold for the new energy revolution he said the ceremony was launching.

Wright retold the shale revolution: a country that imported 60 percent of its oil 25 years ago is now a net oil exporter and by far the world’s largest producer, and the world’s largest former natural-gas importer is now its largest net exporter, as he stated the reversals. He attacked what he called the outright demonization of oil, gas, and coal, arguing hydrocarbons created and enable the modern world, and defended coal in particular — the biggest source of global electricity for over 120 years and still by far the largest today, as he stated it. He pointed to the mine’s pillars as what the President calls big, beautiful, clean coal, and to the rare earth elements that play a critical role in everything from dishwashers to F-35 fighter jets, as he described their reach.

Why it matters

The Brook Mine ceremony is Wright blessing a coal mine that is also a rare-earths project — the administration’s coal defense and its critical-minerals campaign sharing one ribbon, in the state whose delegation fought the policies Wright was there to bury.
