What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum joined JERA — Japan’s largest LNG importer, whose CEO Yukio Kani attended — and four American LNG firms to finalize export agreements, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the June 11, 2025 event. The department’s upload title describes the agreements as expected to add more than $200 billion to U.S. GDP.

Wright opened by recalling that the President ended the pause on LNG exports on his first day in office, and said the Department of Energy has since approved over 100 million tons per year of additional U.S. LNG export capacity — an addition he said is significantly larger than today’s second-largest global LNG exporter. He called LNG one of the largest and fastest-growing U.S. exports and predicted it would before long be the country’s single largest export. Burgum, who chairs the National Energy Dominance Council on which Wright serves as vice chair, credited Wright’s industry experience as key to the agreements and framed the council’s work as creating the conditions for more announcements like this one.

Why it matters

The JERA signing is the export half of the energy-dominance doctrine made concrete: a first-day permitting reversal converted, within five months, into signed Japanese purchase agreements with the NEDC’s chair and vice chair presiding together — the alliance and trade case for LNG stated in one ceremony.

Scoreboard candidate
