What happened

Deputy Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling addressed the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland, in a speech the Department of Labor released on June 10, 2025. He called the ILC, as he put it, “the premier global conference addressing the intersection of jobs, rights, and growth,” and said he was representing the United States of America and the American worker. By restoring America First values, he said, President Trump has set America back on a path of strength, innovation, and economic triumph — with, as he stated the figure, over a half million new jobs added in the few months since Inauguration Day, American workers keeping more of their money and embarking on new career paths after years of heavy-handed regulation and soaring prices, as he characterized the prior record.

On international standards, Sonderling said this century’s international policies must be characterized by freedom, not fear, and that the United States will not tolerate an unfair or biased standard which puts American workers last, as he stated the position. International standards must promote fairness without eliminating choice, recognizing the diversity of national systems, as he argued them. The department’s description notes the speech’s topics included the President’s agenda on the platform economy and artificial intelligence.

Why it matters

The Geneva address is Sonderling’s fullest early statement of the administration’s international labor posture: America First economics presented to the ILO, with U.S. job growth as the evidence and a fairness-without-uniformity test applied to any international standard — the brief he carried into the platform-economy and AI negotiations the department names.
