What happened
Education Secretary Linda McMahon testified before the House Committee on Education and Workforce on June 4, 2025, at the committee’s hearing titled “Examining the Policies and Priorities of the Department of Education,” in CBS News’ full carry of the session. McMahon delivered the budget case she had carried to the appropriators the two weeks before: the goal, as she stated it, of responsibly eliminating federal bureaucracy, cutting waste, and giving education back to states, parents, and educators, with a request that reduces department funding by more than 15 percent, old contracts cut, and grants for what she called illegal DEI programs suspended.
In questioning, McMahon described the department’s campus civil-rights enforcement in her own words: funding had been held back from Columbia and from Harvard under Title VI, she said, both universities had been asked to come to the table for negotiations, and the department was approaching and investigating probably about 60 other universities for civil rights violations, as she stated the figure. Asked what excited her most about returning education authority to the states, she answered that the best education is that closest to the child — governors, superintendents, and teachers, she said, are the ones who can make the best decisions. The committee’s criticism was led by Ranking Member Bobby Scott, who told her the budget does not signal a path of success for America’s students and families and urged her to reverse course, as he stated his position.
Why it matters
Before the authorizing committee, the FY26 case widened from a budget argument into the full governing record — funding, civil-rights enforcement, and the theory of the wind-down itself. The hearing is also where the scale of the campus investigations was put on the record by the Secretary herself, a number that anchors the enforcement half of her tenure.
