What happened
Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered remarks at the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the May 19, 2025 visit. Wright opened with the national anthem — gratitude, he said, for those who created the nation against all odds — and told the workforce that Pantex and the people of Amarillo have been central to the mission of defending the country’s borders and ideals, because freedom isn’t free.
Wright brought regards from President Trump, whom he described as incredibly committed to modernizing the nuclear stockpile as quickly, efficiently, robustly, and strongly as possible, and tied that mission to the President’s formula as he stated it: peace and prosperity at home and peace abroad go together, and a prosperous, strong America is the best guarantee of peace abroad. He also told the room how the job found him: at a dinner a little more than a year earlier, the President told him he should be Secretary of Energy, and his answer — that if asked to serve his country there is only one answer — required no thought.
Why it matters
Pantex is where the Energy Department’s weapons mission is most physical, and Wright’s visit is the stewardship half of his portfolio stated to the workforce itself: the stockpile modernization commitment, delivered not in a budget document but in the room where the work is done.
